Chapter 2- Evolution of the labor market Knights of Labor - 1869, Stephens- so members would not be discharged by their employers for participating in labor organizations American Federation of Labor (AFL )- 1886, founded when members were expelled from the KOL. Independent control over own identity and operations (cigar makers) Samuel Gompers- Founded of the AFL Pure and Simple Unionism - two objectives: economic betterment for members, enhancement of the capitalistic system Open Shop Movement- employers opposed unions through; ensuring employees had the freedom to determine whether or not to join a union American Plan- employer’s desire for employee’s to adhere to the traditional American value of rugged individualism Industrial Spies- employers hired to determine which employees had pro union sentiments Blacklisted - identified employees names would be given to other employers in the area Mohawk Valley Formula - formulated specific steps used by an employer to defeat an organizing drive
