Chapter 8- Administrative issues Technological change - changes in the production process that result from new machinery Automation - machine performs tasks formerly performed by humans High performance work organization - Saves and creates jobs and is globally competitive and stimulating company growth Deskilling - reduction in the responsibility or skill level required to perform a job Job security - work rules and provisions to that attempt to make jobs more secure (spread workload) Featherbedding - unreasonable limits to the amount of work employees do in a given amount of time Worker adjustment and retraining Act- large number of employers shut down or initiated layoffs while giving employees less than 14 days advance notice Subcontracting - Contracting work to an outside vendor when the employer cannot do all or part of the work or when the vendor can do the work at a lower cost Outsourcing - Contracting work that the employer does not do, to an outside vendor to reduce costs Off shoring
