Good in theory, bad in practice o Russia had to change politically and economically after the end of the cold war, but they still favored an iron fist and thought that democracy was still corrupt o By the 1970s, it looked as though the Soviets were winning o 1979 – The Iranian crisis o The reunification of Germany, and it would become a part of NATO o The soviets give up satellite countries in Eastern Europe, they join NATO, and then the communist party disintegrates at the end of 1991 and the USSR breaks up into 15 states o Gorbachev willingly gives up sphere of influence in Eastern Europe o IF we didn’t go to war, the world would go to a multi-polar system where a lot of countries are in power such as Germany Levels of analysis and the end of the cold war - Problems of systemic level o Difficulty explaining change Survival is key, this is from the fact that there is no overarching world government Realists believe that the Soviets committed suicide because of the redistribution of power.
