Pointers for Approaching the Take-Home Essay I wanted to give you a little more guidance to help you with the essay assignment. The first page discusses some general pointers that I hope will help you think about how to best approach the assignment. The second page mentions a few points that touch on some common problems that I have noticed from previous essay assignments. I hope you find these pointers helpful. Some general pointers: 1) You need to identify the parameters of the question at hand. First, you should determine which reading and lecture materials are relevant to the question you have chosen. Then you will need to review this material thoroughly with an eye toward identifying the central debate(s) on the topic and identifying the various perspectives/arguments with regard to the debate(s). It is important to think about what to include and not include in your discussion. 2) The next step will be to construct a thesis/argument that speaks to the question and will guide your entire essay. You can only do this well after having reviewed
