Modern China Class Notes Chinese people refer to china as “the middle kingdon”. -Literally means “the central state”. China now is very different from how it used to be. Territory was under control of different dynasties. Referred to as “china proper”. China Proper-Where Chinese people have lived for thousands of years. -Han is the dominant ethnic group in China (90.5%) of Chinese population. -Over 50 ethnic minorities in china. Mongolia was part of China during the Qing dynasty. Northwest China as the uigers-Chinese Muslims More than half of Chinese territory is populated by non-Han ethnic groups. Peoples Republic of China -23 Provinces -5 autonomous regions-outside of China proper. Rules-party boss of the 5 regions must be Han Chinese. -4 municipalities-under control of central governments. Some disputes post WWII between USSR and China (now solved) Disputes over boundaries between China and India. South China Sea-Main source of trouble for China. -Current conflict with Vietnam over fishing rights. What is China? Taiwan has a different version of the Chinese map. -They include Mongolia in China. -China offered Mongolia to Russia in exchange for the Russians to end support for the communists. China went back on their word and revoked Mongolian independence because Russia kept aiding Chinese communists. Map the U.S. uses-Taiwan is not enclosed, Mongolia is separate. India/China border is unclear. Greater China”- areas populated by Chinese. -China -Taiwan -Hong Kong -Macao -Chinese Diasporas
