Cultural Politics Obregon was elected president during the revolution, and he asked Jose Vasconcelos to be in charge of education. After Jose Vasconcelos agreed to lead Obregon's educational reform, he began the policy of indigenismo. He sought a single language and a single culture by teaching Spanish in public schools. The whole process emphasized about “the Mexican” and “the nation.” He could not be successful because other people were following him, but overall he did very well. The Mexican revolution was initiated, for the most part, by the middle and upper classes of porfiriato. The state of Sonora was for the sonorans, their laboratory and their school both as men of business and as politicians. They described themselves as the Californians of Mexico who with to transform their country into another California.
