THIS IS THE ASSIGNMENT: For background, you should read   “Reconstruction in the 1920s” by Jean Meyer (in Bethell,  Mexico since Independence , 201-240) . The essay by Vaughan in   The Eagle and the Virgin:  Nation   and   Cultural   Revolution   in   Mexico ,   1920-1940   (“Nationalizing   the   Countryside:  Schools and Rural Communities in the 1930s,” 157-175 ) will also prove helpful. We will also be  discussing a relevant document (José Vasconcelos’s “The Modern Missionaries”) in class on  Thursday, to help finalize your thoughts. Then write a short paper (2 pp. double-spaced) on the  following:  Prompt . Place yourself in the shoes of a rural teacher arriving for the first time in a Spanish- speaking peasant village in 1920s Mexico. You have been trained as one of the new “cultural  missionaries,” charged with “civilizing” the countryside and promoting a revolutionary culture  based on patriotism, modernization, and loyalty to the state. Your first task is to round up the  children, even though their parents prefer them to work the fields not study. Then you have to  persuade the adults to build a schoolhouse––donating their time, labor, and money to the project–– and tend a farm where you will teach them to grow more valuable crops than corn and beans.  Finally you suggest that on Sunday the peasants organize a patriotic flag ceremony, even though the
