Women in the Mexican Revolution The Mexican Revolution was undoubtedly a pivotal moment in time for Mexico and its people. While numerous books have been written and historical portrayals have been filmed about it, there is an extremely important section of its history that is frequently excluded – the women who facilitated the revolution and, essentially, carried the heavy burden of the war on their shoulders. Before the revolution, women were severely restricted to sex based roles in every aspect of their lives. Reduced to only being caregivers, “women lived in the shadow of their husbands, dedicated to family life and church” (Suet and Macias). A woman’s duty, it was believed, was to devote her time to household chores, church, and taking care of her husband and children; her place was certainly not in politics and war. When the revolution began, however, every able-bodied person was needed, regardless of gender, and women received a call to arms from both the revolutionists and the Federal Army (Suet and Macias). Called soldaderas , many of these women chose to follow their husbands to battle,
