1Jacquelyn Reed ENG-105May 15, 2020Mary PettyThe Increase in ADHD Diagnosis There has been an increase in children and adults being diagnosed with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), in fact study show “ADHD prevalence rate increased from 6.8% to 14.4% between 2005 and 2014” (Davidovitch, et. al., 2017). It is simply stating that the rate doubled over time. There are a lot of things that can be done to reduce the increase in diagnosis. The growth in awareness would continue, but it will help to minimize ADHD by diagnosing and recognizing the symptoms and signs of other disorders. Increased ADHD diagnosis in children and adults is caused by over-diagnosis, improved understanding of the disorder, and other unidentified disorders.There are many factors that can lead to overdiagnosis when it comes to criteria. Although doctors have the last say when it comes to diagnosing children, they rely on the assessment of teachers and/or parents(informants). According to Getaham “Reliance on parents or teacher records to diagnose ADHD in children appears to contribute to overestimation of the prevalence (Getaham et. al., 2017). There are parents who have the main aim of obtaining care for their child/ children and teachers who are not educated on what behavior each condition entails. Unfortunately, knowledge received by parents and/or teacher may lead to overdiagnoses. The criteria for adults are different. Most diagnosis for ADHD is normally detected in childhood, a flawed diagnostic criterion “the DSM-5 for adults are so broad that they fail to distinguish
