Working with secondary data
Different analyses have been done using the secondary data from the year 1962 1992. All these analyses
are done in SPSS. In this research the suicide rates (black females, black males, white males and white
females) are taken as the dependent variable and the percentage of unemployment, education and
marriage are taken as independent variables.
Means:
Mean usually means the average.
Here the
average
suicide rates of black male is 6.691, black female is 1.042, white male is 11.648 and
white female is 2.215.
The
average
percentage of person who are unemployed for men (20yrs and older) is 4.985 and for
women it is 5.721.
The
average
percentage of people aged 25 and older who have completed high school or more for black
males is 46.781, black females
is 48.185, white males
is 66.830 and white females is 66.812.
The
average
percentage of males who are married is 63.9042 and 59.4336 for females.
Modes:
Mode means the most frequently occurring value in a set of observation. Sometimes there is more than
one mode .That time we usually take the smallest value.
Here the most occurring value (mode) of suicide rates of black males is 7.4, black females is 0.8, white
males is 12.8 and white females is 2.1
The most occurring value (mode) of person who are unemployed for men (20yrs and older) is 4.5 and for
women it is 5.4.
The most occurring value (mode) of people aged 25 and older who have completed high school or more
for black males is 25.8, black females
is 26.2, white males is 47.4 and white females is 49.9.
The most occurring value (mode) for married males is 59.02 and 54.90 for females.
Standard Deviation:
The standard deviation is used to see how spread out the data is. Small standard deviation
indicates that the data are clustered closely around the mean. Large standard deviation indicates
that the data are far from the mean.

View Full DocumentThe standard deviation of black males’ suicide rate is 1.1563 where the mean is 6.691. So we can
say that the data are fairly centered. (If the standard deviation is less than 1/3 of the mean, it is
fairly centered.)
The standard deviation of black females’ suicide rate is 0.2031 where the mean is 1.042. So we
can say that the data are fairly centered. (If the standard deviation is less than 1/3 of the mean, it
is fairly centered).
The standard deviation of white males’ suicide rate is 1.2255 where the mean is 11.648. So we
can say that the data are fairly centered. (If the standard deviation is less than 1/3 of the mean, it
is fairly centered).
The standard deviation of white females’ suicide rate is 0.3124 where the mean is 2.215. So we
can say that the data are fairly centered. (If the standard deviation is less than 1/3 of the mean,
data are is fairly centered).
