The themes of Sacrifice of the stories: The Lottery, The Metamorphosis, The One The Death of Ivan Ilych, and Who Walk Away From Omelas. The Lottery: In the story of “The Lottery” the author Shirley Jackson describes one of the most haunting and shocking story of modern society. The story explains one of the incidences of a small village where a woman was stoned to death to continue the ritual cultures of the society that generally happens in the month of June of each year. Each villager draws slip of paper from a ballot box until a housewife Tessie Hutchinson receives a slip with a black mark on it. Then she becomes a target for all the attendees and she is stoned to death to maintain their ritual sacrifice that happens in the month of June of each year. My body shivers to describe this horror story and the level of cruelty on Tessie Hutchinson. This story is a sad one but the notable thing is that the woman, Tessie Hutchinson, sacrifices her life in order to keep the ongoing rituals of the society. Although this might be considered as a good sacrifice, stoning to death of a human being is really a cruelty. The Metamorphosis
