Aflac Case Study Aflac, an insurance company that mainly covers workers compensation has been in a spotlight over an issue concerning statements made by the man, Gilbert Gottfried, who does the voice of the company’s beloved cartoon duck. Aflac covers a large range of insurance policies but is more known for compensation with workers involving accident or illness. Aflac does most of their business in Japan where they cover one in four households and in terms of individual insurance policies; they are the largest life insurer. In March of 2011 a devastating earthquake with a magnitude of 8.9 shook the northeast coast of Japan. This earthquake is the fifth largest earthquake since 1900 and the largest in Japan within the last 140 years. The resulting tsunami killed an estimated 7,197 people and damaged the Japanese community as a whole. Gilbert Gottfried took his comedy too far and posted several (about 10) inappropriate “tweets” concerning the Japan earthquake and tsunami. These “tweets” include “I just split up with my girlfriend but like the Japanese say, “They’ll be another one floating by any minute now.”” “Japan is really advanced. They don’t go to the beach. The beach comes to them.” Gottfried was immediately dismissed and commercials and ads to look for a replacement duck were put in circulation.
