Brockmiller 1 Lauren Brockmiller BOT 121 Dr. Moore Due 3/2/10 Darwin 2.0 Is it time to upgrade Darwin? Dare we even think of it? Some scientists believe that Darwin’s ideas are outdated. The article Darwin Still Rules, But Some Scientists Dream of a Paradigm Shift , poses this question. It examines Darwin’s original ideas, which were thought to be brilliant at the time, and how our views of them have changed over the years to encompass many new perspectives. The main points of this article are summarized in the following quote: “Concerns about the sources of evolutionary innovation and discoveries about how DNA evolves have led some to propose that mutations, not selection, drive much of evolution, or at least the main episodes of innovation, like the origin of major animal groups, including vertebrates” (Erwin, 2007). To that point, the article encompasses three main points. The first is that “Comparative studies of development have illuminated how genes operate, and evolve, and this places less emphasis on the gradual accumulation of small genetic changes emphasized by the modern synthesis”(Erwin, 2007). The article calls this “The Achilles’ heel of modern synthesis” (Erwin, 2007). It goes on to explain this in greater detail, talking about how modern synthesis “…deals primarily with the transmissions of genes from one generation to the next, but not how genes produce bodies” (Erwin, 2007). The second point this article stresses is that “Work in ecology has emphasized
