Chapter 1 (Europe) 1. Land hemisphere the half of the globe containing the greatest amount of land surface, centered on Western Europe. 2. Physiography means landscape description, commonly refers to the total physical geography of a place. 3. Infrastructure is the foundation of a society; urban centers, transport networks, communication, energy distribution systems, farms factories, mines, and such facilities as schools, hospitals, postal services, and police and armed force. 4. Local functional specialization is a hallmark of Europe’s economic geography that later spread to many other parts of the world. 5. The Isolated State developed the first serious treatment of spatial economics, connecting it with the theory of rent. 6. Model is an idealized representation of reality built to demonstrate its most important properties. 7. Industrial Revolution applied to the social and economic changes in agriculture, commerce and especially manufacturing and urbanization that resulted from technological innovations and specialization in late 18 th century Europe. 8. Nation-state is a country whose population possesses a substantial degree of cultural homogeneity and unity. 9.
