Pumps are among the most useful pieces of equipment in construction. Pumps may be small, such as those used to dewater a construction site. An example is shown in the next slides where a small dewatering pump was being used while disaster was waiting to happen (although the pump was not the problem). Dredging is basically using pumps of all sizes to move large volumes of soil out from bodies of water, such as canals, rivers, harbors, open seas, etc. Dredging uses water (hydraulics) to move solids in suspension large distances at a fraction of the cost of mechanical systems (excavators or hoes with trucks). This lecture will determine the basic hydraulic parameters of a dredging project. Subsequent lectures will determine what size pump and supporting equipment (such as pipelines) should be used for a specific project. Since each project requires optimized equipment specifically suited to that job, many dredgers rent rather than own dredges, thereby performing each project at the least cost.

An example of dewatering is shown in this Dubai building site. The mishap took place on 7 February 2007, and the site was an excavation next to a salt water canal.
