The dredging team will spend a considerable time in the office preparing the equipment and personnel for the project. When the field work starts, it will involve many tasks before the actual dredging begins. One of the first field tasks involves surveying: the laying out a reference line ( RL ). The RL will provide stationing and dredging cross-sections in the channels. The RL will also mark the layout of the discharge pipeline, the shoreline, will mark the spoil- disposal area(s), the DMMA retaining levees, access roads, material storage areas, etc. This overall drawing by the contractor becomes the mobilization plan . The surveyor uses a hydrographic survey software to collect and record all the data of each channel and cross-sections at regular intervals. This data includes existing depths, the channel bottom profile, land-marks, etc, based on GPS references. The data is stored as an AutoCAD file. The surveyors AutoCAD file is used by the dredger as the data base for the dredging software (for example, DREDGEPACK). This survey launch is profiling a cross-section to the main channels reference line ( RL ) in the background. Surveys may also monitoring the limits of, (1) sediment concentrations, (2) turbidity, (3) dissolved oxygen, (4) salinity, (5) current velocity and (6) temperature. These are the main parameters that dredgers need to maintain environmental quality controls....
