The Human Species – 8/22/07 Anthropology: field of inquiry that studies human culture and evolutionary aspects of human biology. o Holistic perspective (look at everything – the span of human evolution). o Broad o The study of every aspect of human existence in all times and places. What’s Human? All the collective experience of our biological ancestors. o Hominids: apes that walk on two feet. o Anthropology studies early hominids to modern humans. All creatures to whom we are closely related (relative) o i.e. our “cousins” the great apes. o Prosimians (i.e. lemurs) help us understand the processes through which humanity developed! o Early primates are extinct; they resembled prosimians. Hominids Humans o Belonging to taxonomic family Hominidae Defining characteristic: bipedalism (walking on two legs). Any species that’s not fully bipedal is not a hominid (i.e. dogs, cats). Hominid “cousins”
