BioNB 2210, Fall 2011 The proper use of citations In all of your work for this course, you will be expected to adhere to the following guidelines on the proper use of citations: 1. If you want to include another author’s ideas or words in your writing, you must provide a citation in your text to the original author’s work. This is required whether you are repeating the author’s exact words (in quotation marks), paraphrasing the author’s words, or discussing the results of the author’s research. Including another author’s words or ideas in your own paper without including a citation is plagiarism. 2. If you want to include another author’s words in your paper, you must use quotation marks to indicate that you took these words from another source. Whether you are quoting a number of sentences or a short phrase, you must put quotation marks around any words in your writing that are not the product of your own thoughts. Using an author’s exact words without enclosing them in quotation marks is plagiarism, even if you provide a citation to the author’s work. 3. Paraphrasing another author’s writing means expressing his or her ideas in your own words . Rearranging the original author’s sentence, changing some of the words, and then including it in your paper without quotation marks is not paraphrasing; this is called “patch writing”, and constitutes plagiarism.
