Unformatted text preview: The Effect of Sordaria fimicola on Genetic Diversity Maggie Liang Bio 110 Sec 036 Dr. Hass Due: October 4, 2010 Introduction: Throughout life, as a part of the sexual life cycle, organisms will undergo the process of meiotic divisions. Fungi are a group of eukaryotic organisms which exists as haploids. In this experiment we are using a fungus called Sordaria fimicola to study independent assortment and crossing over. As mentioned, Sordaria lives most of its life in a haploid state but when two fungi grow together, the hyphae will fuse into two separate haploid nuclei which will form into one diploid nucleus. The purpose of this experiment is to observe sexual reproduction and to calculate the map distance from the gene to the centromere of the chromosome. Based on the information provided and research, we can conclude that some spores will be black and some spores will be tan with the ratios of 4:4, 2:4:2, and 2:2:2:2. If the ratios of the spores are 2:4:2 and 2:2:2:2 then we know that crossing over has occurred but if its 4:4, then it shows no crossing over. Materials and Methods: In this lab, there were two parts. The first part was to divide up the petri dish into four quadrants with a marker.
