Final exam review 1. Epistemology- the study of knowledge 2. Empiricism- view that all knowledge is ultimately based on our sense experiences 3. Locke uses the word qualities to mean when seeing a snowball the powers to produce ideas of white, cold, and round are in us as they are in the snowball 4. Color is not a primary quality 5. The modern period of philosophy is distinguishable from the medieval and scholastic period in that philosophers were generally independent free thinkers working outside of schools 6. Ostensive definition- is showing the meaning of the word/phrase by pointing out an object/action 7. Whorf argues that different usages of words by different cultures= different ways of thinking 8. In the piece “the language instinct” Steven Pinker’s main aim is- our thought and experience is not significantly determined by language 9. Pinker points out that we have all had the experience of uttering or writing sentences then stopping and realizing it wasn’t what we meant to say- he uses this as evidence that our thoughts are not determined by words we use to express them
