6/27/11 Small Group CMN Small groups Three to seven people working together to achieve a common goal Assembly effect When the group’s solution or product is superior to the individual work of even the best member Synergy - The total amount of group effort exerted to achieve the goal - Intrinsic synergy o The amount of energy devoted to interpersonal conflicts - Extrinsic synergy o The remaining amount of energy available to accomplish the task - Equation o Synergy – Intrinsic = Extrinsic Role development - Task vs. Interpersonal o Task roles Behaviors that facilitate the accomplishment of the common goal o Interpersonal roles Behaviors that facilitate the resolution of socio-emotional problems, group maintenance, or process goals o Best to have a good mixture o Self-centered roles? – people who are focused on themselves; make sure they do well rather than whole group - Values of a task group o Variety of ideas and points of view o Generate interest and involvement in issues o Allows conflict to surface and be resolved o Facilitates internalization and learning of material o Allows for each members’ creative potential to enlarge and be put to use
