April 26, 2011 Relational Dialectics (cont’d) By Leslie Baxter and Barbara Montgomery Assumptions of Relational Dialectics 1. Relationships are not linear (pulled in diff directions, much messier) 2. Relational life is characterized by change (again, always pulled in diff dir.) 3. Contradictions or tensions between opposites never go away and never cease to provide tension 4. Communication is central to organizing and negotiating relational contradictions 5. Relationships need balance Managing the Dialectical Tensions - Denial (refusing to acknowledge the tension is even there; ex. ALWAYS being with the s/o) - Disorientation (ex. all of a sudden realizing you’re committed, and run away) (LACK OF COMMUNICATION – central feature of the two above) - Spiraling Alteration (move back and forth from one side of tension to another) - Segmentation (when you compartmentalize life to ease tension) - Balance (negotiation, compromise of how to create a good mix of the tensions) - Integration (bringing both sides of tension into one; ex. being married 54 years (same thing) can
