Unformatted text preview: CMN REVIEW 6/2/11 Cultural Approach to Studying Organizations- Orgs are a culture; b/c of that we have to study them uniquely- Prescriptive approach: good culture, put it on org- Descriptive: go inside culture and observe comm. patterns within- Look at communication events and documents Critical Approach to Studying Orgs- Crit theorists have 3 key concerns: 1- power 2-domination (how is the power structure in place used to dominate people who do not have power) 3- emancipation- Coporatocracy/corporate colonization: corps take over world; power to create policy- Linear Model of Comm: Allows corporatocracy to continue (theyre not interested in feedback)- Stake holder model need all who hold a stake to have a say in corps and structure; want more democracy Agenda Setting Theory- Media doesnt tell us what to think, rather what to think ABOUT (set the agenda, we create opinions) Spiral of Silence Theory- Afraid of being an outcast- In order to be more popular, we will silence our thoughts and ideas- Republican ex....
