QUESTIONS FOR LEN ON COURSE MATERIAL – FINAL EXAM (EXCUSE ALL MY TYPOS – I COPIED THESE DIRECTLY FROM MY EMAIL LETTERS) QUESTION: Len, I don't know how to understand "Organizations cannot be held accountable" in K book…. LEN’S ANSWER: WHY CAN'T WE HOLD ORGANIZATIONS ACCOUNTABLE? THIS ARGUMENT SUGGESTS THAT ORGANIZATIONS, UNLIKE HUMANS CANNOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE IN THE SAME WAY AS WE CAN. HOW DO WE MAKE NIKE OR GAP OR WALMART BECOME MORE SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE? THEY ARE MULTINATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS THAT MANAGE VAST ENTEPRISES - CAN WE TELL THEM TO ONLY EMPLOY PEOPLE ONLY WHERE WE DECIDE IT IS BENEFICIAL? DO WE MAKE THEM PAY CERTAIN MINIMUM WAGES? TO WHOM ARE ORGANIZATIONS ACCOUNTABLE TO? IT IS EASIER TO HOLD SPECIFIC INDIVIDUALS ACCOUNTABLE FOR WHAT THEY DO THAN FOR ORGANIZATIONS. FOR EXAMPLE, WAS THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION OF IBM RESPONSIBLE FOR ITS INVOLVEMENT IN THE HOLOCAUST? SHOULD IBM HAVE BEEN FORCED INTO BANKRUPTCY BECAUSE OF THE DECISIONS OF ITS SENIOR MANAGEMENT. THIS IS AN EXMAPLE OF THE CHALLENGE OF HOLDING ENTIRE ORGANIZATIONS ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS. QUESTION: In the debate against CSR, can I explain “business plays by its own rules” in this way as follows: The ethics in business are different than the ethics out of business. MOREOVER, THERE ARE COMMONLY ACCEPTED AND EXPECTED BUSINESS PRACTICES THAT ARE CONSIDERED LEGITIMATE WITHIN THE WORLD OF BUSINESS - CAN WE USE OUR OWN PERSONAL SET OF ETHICS TO EVALUATE THE EHTICS OF BUSINESS - OR DO PERSONAL AND BUSINESS ETHICS FUNCTION BASED ON DIFFERENT SETS OF RULES AND EXPECATIONS? THIS ARGUMENT SUGGESTS THAT THEY DO WORK

DIFFERENTLY AND WE CANNOT ALWAYS EXPECT TO APPLY OUR OWN PERSONAL SETS OF ETHICS TO DECIDE HOW THINGS SHOULD OPERATE IN THE BUSINESS WORLD. CONSEQUENTLY, THE NOTION OF CSR IS DIFFICULT TO APPLY. QUESTION:
