The following is a student profile of a child named Jose. Jose is six years old and is repeating kindergarten after being held back the previous year. Jose meets most developmental requirements to be compared to the other students in his class as far as being artistic and expressing himself is concerned, though his abilities range only average. Jose needs help with improving his speech. He mumbles or points to an object while trying to communicate. The teacher has noticed on several occasions that Jose does not communicate well verbally despite his repeating kindergarten. His speech development is a major cause for concern. Tests show that Jose is two or three years behind in speech development than that of his peers. At home Jose’s Father & Step-Mother speak English & Spanish although his bio-logical mother only speaks Spanish when Jose is with her every other week. Jose becomes confused between the two languages and therefore does not talk much. Even though he does not communicate well verbally, he does seem to understand most of what is said to him in English and follows directions well. He can follow directions given to him step-by-step completely. In Jose’s need for improvement with his speech development, he would benefit from receiving assistance with forming sentences. He struggles with making the correct sounds of letters and putting words together to form a sentence. Jose’s parents are concerned about his speech development so are willing to take classes to assist them in learning English as a second language and his step-sister has offered to help him at home. Despite Jose’s need for improvement in his speech development, he shows strength in other areas. He puts forth tremendous effort in his work and listens well when given instructions. Jose enjoys interacting with peers despite his trouble communicating and has many friends. He makes friends easily being personable and compassionate toward other children in his class.
