Neo-Platonism Advocated by Plotinus - Best known philosopher or religion - Spiritualizes Plato’s world of the forms o Said forms exist in the mind of God - Plotinus’s God known as “The one” o Advocated pantheism : all is one and one is God Everything around us is a manifestation of God o Infinite mind and spirit o No material world that can fully enclose being o Cannot be totalized in a finite thing o Greatness of God surpasses all material things If you follow this philosophy you get support for religious beliefs - Logical basis - Faith alone isn’t enough - Good philosophical basis - Opens up possibility of religious belief - Open to revising beliefs - Following the philosophy of Plotinus Philosophy provides solution to problem of God and Evil - defines evil as absence of goodness ( defined by Augustine but inspired by Plotinus) - If you believe God is infinite then evil does not exist within its own realm - God has limitations imposed on himself Says it is not irrational to believe in a universal God
