Lecture 29 – Water Quality 06/04/2011 11:08:00 .007% of water is available to humans most humans require 4-5 gallons/day for usage in the united states, we use 100-175 gallons/day in our homes in Africa, average water usage is 5 gallons/day Definition Water quality: the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of water  (usually in respect to its suitability for a particular purpose) Water pollution: the degradation of water quality. In defining pollution, we  generally look at its intended use, how far it departs from the norm, effects on  public health, or ecological impacts. Quality of world and US water World 1.1 billion people = no access to adequate drinking water 2.6 billion people = lack access to sanitation services for children under 5, water-related diseases are the leading cause of death every 15 sec, a child dies from a water-related disease 88% of all diseases are caused by unsafe drinking water, inadequate
