Answering Essay Questions Read through the whole exam first. Plan how much time you can spend on each question. Choose which questions (if given the choice) you can answer. Find the important words that will guide you to give the correct answer. Make an outline with the main points you plan to cover. Write legibly and proofread for spelling, punctuation, and understanding. Important Words in Essay Questions Compare Look for similarities and differences between the things mentioned (e.g., "Compare the U.S. and Confederate Constitutions"). Contrast Stress the dissimilarities Criticize Make your judgment about the item in question. Stress the deficiencies (e.g., "Criticize Paul Valery's views on the poet's language"). Define Provide a concise and accurate definition of what is called for.
