Unformatted text preview: Master of Science in Engineering Management COURSE OUTLINE: ENM 607A&B Master’s Research Project I&II Instructor: Office Hours: E-Mail : Telephone: Course Textbook: There is no standard textbook associated with this project course. Refer to the Project Handbook located at: http://www.nu.edu/syllabus/soet/handbook/PMhandbook.htm Course Prerequisites: All common, concentration and elective courses as defined in the program Course Description: This project course focuses on the application of engineering processes learned through this program. The students are to select research topics under the guidance of instructor and conduct research and write a detailed report. Working in teams or as individuals under the guidance of their assigned faculty advisor, students clarify research topics and identify sources from which data is gathered in preparation for the project. This project may require detailed implementation of computer tools such as Microsoft Project 2002. Students then gather data and present their research in both written and oral form to the client organization, if applicable, and to other students and faculty. The duration of this course is one month. Learning Outcomes: Project Management Concentration: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: ℜ• Evaluate critically a given project for its success and/or failure based on concepts learned. ℜ• Write a Masters level research project/thesis based on the findings that include all essential elements of a good project management engineering system. 1 National University SOET Department of Applied Engineering ℜ• Define a specific research problem and/or a business study closely related to project management engineering or safety/security engineering or industrial engineering ℜ• Show a comprehensive literature review relating to the study and methods used in the project ℜ• Identify sources of data for the project analysis and gather and analyze relevant data ℜ• Show timelines and key milestones for execution and completion of project activities ℜ• Identify, describe and use appropriate quantitative and analytical models for drawing conclusions ℜ• Defend the project findings during oral presentation to faculty, class and, if applicable, to clients. Safety/Security Engineering Concentration: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: ℜ• Evaluate critically safety and security system of a building, and/or a system. ℜ• Write a Masters level research project/thesis based on the findings that include all essential elements of a good safety and security engineering system. ℜ• Define a specific research problem and/or an industrial / commercial case study ℜ• Show a comprehensive literature review relating to the study and methods used in the project ℜ• Identify sources of data for the analysis and gather and analyze relevant data ℜ• Identify, describe and use appropriate quantitative and analytical models for drawing...
