Activity 1: Just before the Tropical Island Experience There are two parts to this assignment: the first is individual work assignment, the second is the teamwork. You are allowed 10 minutes for the first part and 20 minutes for the second. The Situation: A small touring boat has been severely damaged by a tropical storm. The boat has been carried miles and miles off course into uncharted, shark-infested waters. The boat cannot be repaired. It will sink in 30 minutes. There are 10 people aboard this sinking ship and only one lifeboat, a rowboat. The lifeboat can only carry seven people. The nearest land is an island which is 15 nautical miles away. The island is uninhabited and tropical. By lifeboat the journey is about two hours or more. The seven passengers you select for the lifeboat have short-term and long-term goal: Short Term : Row two hours to get to the island safely; one of these will be at night when the island disappears from sight.
