NORMAL DISTRIBUTION Characteristics Bell shaped curve X-scale: mean = μ and standard deviation = σ (The normal distribution) Z-scale: mean = 0, standard deviation = 1 (The standard normal distribution) EXCEL NORMDIST(k, μ , σ ,FALSE) = The density at X = k for a normal distribution with mean = μ and standard deviation = σ (Not a probability) NORMDIST(k, μ , σ ,TRUE) = P(X k) for a normal distribution with mean = μ and standard deviation = σ NORMSDIST(k) = P(Z k) for the standard normal distribution NORMINV(p, μ , σ ) = x value that puts probability p to the left of x from a normal distribution with mean μ and standard deviation σ NORMSINV(p) = z value that puts probability p to the left of z from a standard normal distribution Examples Example 1 NORMDIST(k, μ , σ ,FALSE) for a Normal Distribution with μ = 60 and σ = 8 60 σ = 8 74 =NORMDIST(74,60,8,FALSE ) gives the height of this line
