"One third of Americans can't name the three branches of government, but two thirds can name a judge on American Idol!" When I first read the findings of this survey, by the Wilmington Delaware based Intercollegiate Studies Institute, I began to consider the state of our society and think about the quote from Benjamin Franklin at the close of the Constitutional Convention, when a Mr. Powel asked him, "Well Doctor (Franklin), what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" "A republic if you can keep it" responded Franklin. “…If you can keep it” Our republic is something we have to keep. If it must be kept, it could be lost. Are we in the process of losing our republic? Also in the Intercollegiate Studies survey: “Thirty percent of elected officials tested did not know that "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" are the inalienable rights referred to in the Declaration of Independence.” “Almost 40 percent of all respondents falsely believe the president has the power to declare war.” “Just over 20 percent falsely believe that the Federal Reserve can increase or decrease government spending.” When I think about the USA Patriot Act that threatens our freedoms by giving the government the power to access to our medical and tax records, the books you buy or borrow without probable cause, and the power to break into our home’s and conduct secret searches without our knowledge. Or, when I hear Congressman Paul Kanjorski, R-PA when asked about the prudence of the trillion dollar bailout of American and international business interests with our taxes say “Well, the citizens just don’t understand the bailout.” And when a vice presidential candidate does not even define the role of the office she is seeking (vice president) correctly when asked. I ask myself how things got so far off track and what can be done to keep our
