Overall, a very mixed setting...effective here and there
More successful in nonsecurity areas
Has not fulfilled its role in providing collective security, w/ the exception of a few rare cases (e.g. In the Korean War, the Soviet Union wasn't there to use Veto power, so Korean War was fought under UN (19501953), Persian Gulf Warauthorized UN action).
Peacekeeping activities have increased since the end of the Cold War (e.g. Haiti, Sudan, Congo), but have produced mixed results.
Most of the substantive work of the UN has been with nonsecurity issues.
Administers and coordinates a variety of health, education, environment, and economic programs.
United Nations effective Programs:
UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), World Health Organization (WHO), World Food Programme (WFP) Agenda Setting (Has worked extremely well)
