Political Science 5 Oct 09 Treaty of Paris (1951) -European Coal and Steel Community: created a "common market" in coal and steel. -Included  France, West Germany , Italy, Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Belgium. Treaty of Rome -1958 (sAme 6 countries) -European Economic Community- -established a common market for a wide range of goods. -European Atomic Energy Community: -Created to promote cooperation in the development of nuclear energy. Single European Act - 1986 -Established the goal of completing the common market by Jan. 1, 1993 -Provided for the free movement of goods, services, capital, and  people. Growth of the European Communities -Denmark, Ireland, and UK -Greece -Portugal and Spain Treaty of European Union (Maastricht, 1992) -Reflected a shift toward a more political phase of integration. -Named changed to European Union.
