Political Science 14 Sep 09 -The Cold War (1949-1991) -U.S. emerged as the dominant hegemon after World War II.   -U.S. and the Soviet Union had been allies of expediency during World War II.   This alliance  quickly broke down afte the war. -Soviet Union moved to establish a “spshere of influence” in Eastern Europe. -Est. ‘puppet governments’- Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary - Truman Doctrine (1947):  Established a “containment” policy.  The U.S. would support  financially and militarily those countries threatened internally or externally by communism. -The Quick Shift to Bipolarity - Soviets test their first atomic bomb –Aug. 1949 Causes of the Cold War -Power transition - narrowing of the ratio of military capabilities between great power rivals. - Ideological incompatibility: -Capitalism (free trade: gov’t. has a minimal role in economy) vs.Socalism                     -Socalism: gov’t is involved in EVERYTHING
