15 Sep 09 The Molar Mass of a substance is the mass in grams of one mole (6.0222 x 10_23) of  the compound. Comparison:   Thousand Grain Weight (TGW) Example:  The molar mass of Methane (CH4) Mass of 1 mol C:12.01g   Mass of 4 mol H: +    4.032g ___(4 x 1.008g) Mass of 1 mol CH4: 16.0 42       ___     16.04g Sample Exercise 3.6: Calculating Molar Mass 1 (p. 86) Juglone, a dye known for centures, is produced from the husks of  black walnuts.  It is  also a natural herbicide that kills off competititve plants around the black walnut tree  but does not affect grass and other noncompetitive plans. The formula for juglone is  C 10 H 6 O 3 A sample of 1.56 x 10 -2 - 1.56 x 10^-2 g juglone / (174.1 g/mol) = 8.96 x 10^ -5 3.5: Percent Composition of Compounds Mass %: (# of atoms of the element) x (atomic mass of the element )  x 100% molar mass of the compound
