(-( American novel…b/c it’s set in Puritan times ) We know her sin, Hester Prynne’s… -Hawthorne’s musing and the effect of who is as a person, ….Gov’t Billingham, his job, an  official Gov’t job, tedious and his speculation that there are certain types of works that drain  your character…how they sentence Hester Prynne -She’s an example to them, NOT A PERSON, a symbol. -There’s no compassion,  -She’s a walking sermon  -They don’t perceive her as having a soul -What is worse…a sin of passion or coldness of the heart? -You use people to make a point; this abstraction means more to you than a person does…  (Human nature?) -Theme of Individual vs. Authority -These Gov’t officials represent the idea of putting a theme/idea above an individual -Though we really believe individuals are worth something -    Arthur Dimsdale reminds us of
