American Lit. 21 April 2010_Wed . We’re still really focused on a certain type of sin…we still pillory people in some ways. -Hawthorne’s big themes or idea is the idea of Pennants vs. Penitents.  The diff. bet. the two: Pennants : paying for your sin; and the punishment you receive or your outward actions Penitents : Actually being sorry; regretful and sorrow for what you’ve done. Do Hester or Arthur pay monetarily?   No.  They pay through shame, humility, and rejection.  -Standing on the platform, made to wear the scarlet letter, isolated. She chooses to isolate herself, to stay there and deal w/ it (doesn’t leave). She makes clothes for the poor and helps out in the community.  Herself imposed pennants. Went way beyond the  sumptuary laws     :     the letter was too fancy, her scarlet letter, A.; and yet her  dress was ugly and plain (grey, somber, coarse) -You’re focused on the symbol, she was a needle woman, this was no accident. (She made gorgeous clothes for Pearl). -The community eventually starts to appreciate her…does she have a change of heart?? No, not really. Arthur Dimmsdale :  his pennants/his crime:  he gets tortured by Chillingsworth; his mental  torture leads to health issues.  He can’t eat.  He was on the verge of insanity.   Though he loved the truth and God, so telling a lie and living w/ hypocrisy is a way of his  pennants.  There is a tremendous degree of cowardice and narcissistic.  He tries to substitute  other forms of pennants… -Hypocrisy is heavy here (his confessions are not specific and heartfelt)
