American LIT 17 Mar 2010_Wed. Edward Allen Poe -married his 13yr old cousin -1 of 3 kids, 2 nd  his dad abandoned the family -she was taken in by wealthy Va women. -Died after 3 rd  baby; kids split up -Poe raised by Allens: Mr. hardheaded Scott merchant, harsh, decent fortune, Mrs. Allen… mmm…not so bright, but loving -Not formally adopted, but still raised as 1 of them -there was a sense of lost, isolation, estrangement due to loss of parents -wanted to attend Univ. of Va        -especially the SCIONS (wanted to be a part of this group, but they were rich) -chose to gamble -foster mother died, his gambling debt, and the father remarried, made his father/son  relationship worse -Poe was not  against slavery, wanted to be a rich white plantation owner and live a fancy life.  Very different from Furough -Unsuccessful in being a part of this society, maladapted, maybe  -Bonded with new found Grandma and aunt;  -Ended up marrying Virginia (his cousin), (he was longing for a family and found it)
