Thorrough left Aldine Pine in Sep. 1847 Died in 1862 Didn’t live to send the end of the Civil War- Abolitionist (wants slavery ended immediately); even went to jail b/c he refused to pay his poll (tax); as was John Brown John Brown- a martyr to the cause; rallying cry for anti-slavery movement- Lincoln was an emancipationist- Thomas Jefferson freed the slaves in his will, but didn’t have the courage to do it while alive-Both Lincoln and Jefferson didn’t believe that Blacks were the equal to whites, {intellectually} Fred. Douglas- 1818-1895- I don’t exactly know how old I am…- About 21 when he escaped (1838), planned it for at least 8 yrs (12 yrs)-Escaped to New Bedford, married Anna Murray had 5 kids-wrote his 1 st narrative in 1845, revised it several times to republish it (1855)-1891: included a lot of details that would have dangerous to include earlier, b/c the Civil War...
