Intro to Psych 1 March 2010_Mon. Psychoactive Drugs: -a large group, psychologists are interested in these b/c they are  mind altering .  They will  indeed  influence our behavior,  the way we  function mentally. -Chemical substances that affect the brain and the nervous system. -Will produce changes in  -as well as our mental processes; our mood; sensations, perceptions How do they work? -Neurotransmitters; chemical substances that are affected.  Then pass messages to diff. parts of  the brain, tells the brain how we should behave or function mentally; -These psychoactive drugs interfere, disrupt the neurotransmitters;  ALTERING THE STATE  OF CONSCIOUSNESS A.  Stimulants -Neurotransmitters; speeds things up; Messages being sent by the neurotransmitters are sped up  b/c they are under the influence of stimulants.  If everything is sped up there will be changes. -Caffeine: Coffee, tea, etc…(mildest of all)
