Lecture 9- Mind/ Body 1 Endocrine System- hypothalamus, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, adrenal glands, testes SNS- fight/ flight PNS-rest/digest Autonomic Signaling and Regulation Sympathetic Nervous Action (SNA) -Innervates vital organs -innervates organs and tissues involved in immunity -Innervates adrenal glands (secretion of epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine) -Release of epinephrine/norepinephrine from adrenergic sympathetic neurons Effects of Epinephrine It prepares the body for emergency situations. Boosts supply of oxygen and glucose to the brain and muscles while inhibiting digestion and other non-essential processes. It increases HR and stroke volume, dilates pupils, and constricts arterioles in the skin and GI tract while dilating arterioles in skeletal muscles. It increases blood glucose (glycogen catabolism) and starts the breakdown of lipids in fat cells. Also suppresses the immune system. Humoral Action (HPA axis)
