Andre Hinojosa 12601675 Assignment 3 The article I decided to review is based on events found in the 1971 Stanford Prison experiment. Psychology professor Phillip Zombardo assembled a team of researchers to conduct the experiment. Out of 70 applicants that applied, 24 healthy, intelligent, middle-class males were selected on the basis that they were healthy and had no mental or physical disorders. The volunteers were paid 15 dollars an hour for their time. The experiment was designed understand how personality traits affected abusive prison situations. Roles of guards and prisoners were assigned at random to the participants by the flip of a coin. The 2 week experiment had to be cut short after only 6 days due to the violence and abuse the prisoners and guards were both giving and receiving. The experiment proved situational attribution of behavior, which means that the prisoners and guards “fell” into the roles they were given.
