SOCI 1 Lecture Notes 09/27/10 Social structure – patterned social arrangements, which form the society as a whole - institutions - social networks - cultural structure, unity - where people gather - common pattern of behavior and activity - relationships - example: fraternities o social structure o nation wide, recognized identity o creates new opportunities socially o social support o shapes life’s chances Cultural structure – given meaning by social structures; patterns of broadly shared values/beliefs as a whole centralized idea; shared by at least some social groups - hegemonic masculinity o powerful personalities o “normal”, common, typical o ruling o you have to “conform” to what is being expected or you’re “weird” o ideals of masculinity that all guys have to live up to otherwise they are excluded university college men party a lot grades are just average (respectable) active social life gym, tan, laundry tough, decisive, invulnerable o “super man is not supposed to be depressed”
