Unformatted text preview: Lecture 03/29/11 28/03/2011 13:45:00 ← “Playtime” Video • Not 1-1 dialogue • Different angles of the camera, different perspectives (perspective of bus driver, of a person, etc) • Constant sound o Baby crying o Footsteps o Man’s luggage tag • Scale, architecture (lots of glass) • Can’t focus much on what people were saying because it wasn’t really about what they were saying; we were trying to capture entire environment • Tourists came to see Paris but they didn’t really see it • Trying to choreograph the whole scene of airport o Black/white/gray city color association, not so much like Paris where it’d be older • Audience is not involved in convo; detail • Paris is no longer old place; change of society • Feeling of film: disorientation alienation o The scene was peaceful but cold at the same time • Scene = set • Place, landscape (character) • There were jokes/little nuances… “Going Down East” Video • Landscape & Place • Hands-on project • Coloring (tinted film) – black and white, put a little color because people were copying it in Paris • Griffith (father of cinema) was well-known for ^ • No voice, only actions • Actions are dramatized with music that fits mood to replace voice • Film constructed around music • Create sense of urgency and fear and death… how do we show it? • Long epic film, historical Lecture 03/31/11 28/03/2011 13:45:00 ← What is a Movie? • Meaning ← ← Movies = commercial ← Films ← Cinema = art • ALL are motion pictures! ← ← Illusion = key in film/movie/cinema studies (sense of reality) • Movement • Reality • Speed ← ← Film stock = composed of shots… 29 secs/film ← Shot = separate ← Cut ← Close-ups = separately filmed and later put together ← ← VIDEO • On guy = up shot sense of authority • Shots are distinct; could be pictures seen one by one • Hidden meaning… our job is to figure out what they’re trying to say/what they’re hiding • Study images intently and determine hidden meaning • Identify with characters depending on shot and scene… we sympathize for the woman suffering o Powerful image • Motif = doves o Idea of soul flying away, freedom o Repetition • Cross takes over the whole film… importance! • Sound ← ← Invisible relationship of cinema • Invisibility • Seamlessness ← ← Story/narrative • Linear story • Twist up reality = filmmaker’s job • Narrative is in between A and B (story!) • Has a structure… we need to break up the structure because it’s seamless and break it down • Cinema = system that needs to be analyzed to understand meaning...
