In mythological sense it represents the mortals trying to reach God and cannot because of the moral boundaries that keep them from doing so. There are mortals who have succeeded and it can be done but because of the intimidation that they face trying to do that, so they dont. Because the Gods are there making rules that they cant. The story, much like the picture represents the boundaries that people have and face in their life from keeping them from reaching their goals. That obstacle is within themselves. The man in the story didnt do anything to stop him but the main character felt compelled to ask and listen to what he had to say when he could have gone inside. In order to change the rules, you have to break them....
