James Thompson SOC 367 Discussion Section Topics 4/23/10 Why the US should be worried about the fact that many people go untreated or undertreated for  depression Depression can have such overpowering symptoms that people are greatly affected in  their daily lives Depression is the leading cause of disability in the US (Gonzales)  o Both Hispanics and African Americans were considerably less likely to receive  care, even if those groups had slightly lower rates of depression than whites,  meaning that the effects of their depression were much more severe o A lack of health insurance in these minority groups was not the main reason for  less care Consequences of Untreated Depression in Teens o 30 percent of teens with depression also develop a substance abuse problem . o Teenagers with depression are likely to have a smaller social circle and take advantage of fewer opportunities for education or careers.
