James Thompson SOC 410 Discussion Questions 9/28/10 1) Bird Reading I am curious to know why they choose the example of upper body strength as an example of a biological difference that gets socialized to become an even greater disparity. While boys on average do have naturally more strength than girls, this can also apply to lower body strength, aerobic endurance, etc. Why pick only upper body strength? And there are many exceptions to the rule as well. Also I might contest that there is not as much emphasis on socializing boys to play sports at a young age as there was a couple decades ago. 2) Aube Reading: This article highlights a paradox in which women who are working full time but experience the “second shift” at home still report highly satisfying role fulfillment despite the near-constant level of work from having a full time job and taking care of most of the responsibilities at home, such as child rearing, cooking, and chores.
