James Thompson SOC 410 Discussion Questions 10/21/10 1) Kawachi Reading What are the underlying causes of what makes a neighborhood socially connected vs.  crime-ridden?  SES and racial composition are not the only factors because as we saw  in the Cohen article, one neighborhood could take care of itself very well while the other  could be crime-ridden despite similar racial and SES composition.  Why is one poor  neighborhood likely to be different from another poor neighborhood? 2) Pearce Reading How much is absolute capital a factor when looking at social capital?  The article notes  that relative position to neighbors and other peers is more important than the absolute  level of resources available to the community in general.  Is this related to the  feminization of poverty where the trend in women’s lower earnings does not get the  attention it deserves because women only compare themselves to their female
