OUTLINE FOR EGYPTIAN ART Key Concepts: Egypt’s need for stability and continuity throughout its 2400 years of independence is reflected in art and religion. Organized, state-sponsored religion lends sacred significance to the central values of the establishment . Most extant Egyptian sculpture and painting is funerary, originally placed in tombs and thus not for public display and/or has historical-narrative content. See, for example, the Palette of Narmer (Stokstad fig. 3-2) , a monument which makes apparent the relationship between Egyptian relief sculpture and painting on the one hand and Egyptian pictographic writing, hieroglyphics , on the other. Sculpture: Free-standing or in-the-round and relief Free-standing sculpture: Limestone statue of the pharoah, Zoser (website images). Bilateral symmetry Frontal viewing point emphasized. Very hard stone = Durability Effectively captures the Egyptian conception of death, i.e. life-in-death or life transposed to a different realm = spectral appearance Cubic, block-like appearance - original block of stone from which extracted can be readily envisaged. Eyes originally of a different material and inlaid Originally placed in the serdab of Zoser's pyramid complex at Saqqara. Meant to be a complete or intact alternate body for the ka or life force of the pharoah to inhabit after death. Diorite statue of the seated pharoah, Khafre (Stokstad figs. 3-9, 10 and website images). Formal characteristics and intended meaning are the same as those for the statue of Zoser. Differences: Less spectral, less an appearance of life-in-death, and thus, in Egyptian terms, a less successful statue. Idealized , almost friendly face, and thus less remote
